文房四宝，砚为其首，笔墨兼纸，皆可随时收索，可与终身俱者，惟砚而已，历久弥珍。古往今来，文人雅士无不以砚呈品、以砚铭心、以砚为友、以砚为藏、以砚为乐。米芾《砚史》有云：“得美石无瑕者必先为砚”。
在中国所产的四大名砚中，尤以端砚最为称着，本品便以端溪佳石精雕而成，色泽紫黑莹润，质坚静雅，抚之绵滑，呵之而成研。砚缘雕云纹一周，砚堂开阔，淌池式墨池，砚背覆手内阴刻形象图，并有松园主人书刻“吃得苦中苦，方为人上人。”警句。
