此熏制作精细，作甪端站立之状，昂首上视，健硕雄壮，体型不大，但气宇不凡。眼窝深凹，双目圆瞪，炯炯有神，气势威严。独角后倚，双耳翘立，后脑、颈部鬃发披散，首为炉顶，腹部中空，可作放置熏香燃料，张口吐舌，獠牙毕露，以便香味飘散。
中国古代经常取各种瑞兽形象制成香熏。甪端，为中国古代传说中的神异之兽，头生一角是其最大特征。沈约在《宋书．符瑞志》曰：“甪端日行万八千里，又晓四夷之语，圣主在位明达方外幽远，则奉书而至。耶律楚材谓为旌星之精灵，异如鬼神。”
