笔筒顾名思义，为插笔所用的文房器具，三国时期的吴国·陆玑《毛诗草木鸟兽虫鱼疏·螟蛉有子》有曰：“取桑虫负之于木空中，或书简笔筒中，七日而化。”这是所见最早的关于笔筒著述。《红楼梦》第四十回：“案上堆着……各色笔筒。” 清沈复《浮生六记·坎坷记愁》：“因是于行囊之外，转得吾父所遗图书、砚台、笔筒数件。”
此笔筒由一段质地细密的紫檀料制成。通体素面，简洁明快，筒身中段微有束腰，细观之，於静中富具韵律之美。经多年把玩使用，器表生成自然包浆，温润而凝重，加之紫檀木料色沉而雅，古朴之气韵尤盛，是一件文房中案头上的佳品。
