笔洗是文房四宝笔、墨、纸、砚之外的一种文房用具，是笔使用后用以濯洗余墨之具。此件笔洗以寿山石为材雕就而成，掏膛利落，横颈稍硕，像生拟梅桩之形，于一侧横出梅枝，寓意崇高品格和坚贞的气节，刚强不屈的性格。底部以寥寥数刀雕刻出树纹，极见巧工。
整器线条流畅，刀法娴熟流畅、朴拙利落。石质润泽，包浆浓郁，供之望而乐禅，观其澄心，解烦驱忧，为案中佳伴也。
寿山石产于福建福州寿山一带，色彩丰富，质地细腻润泽，很适合精密雕刻，是案头雕塑艺术的上好材料，自宋代已采石制器，至明末以后始著称于世。康熙学人高兆、毛奇龄在《观石录》、《后观石录》中分记数十种寿山石的珍品妙石。
