Description

Erasmus Quellinus II and workshop, The Magnanimity of Scipio Oil on canvas. 108 x 162.8 cm. Provenance Private collection, Braaschaat 1977. - German private ownership. Literature Jean-Pierre De Bruyn: Erasmus II Quellinus. De Schilderijen met Catalogue Raisonné, Freren 1988, p. 196f., no. 127, illus. The Roman commander Publius Cornelis Scipio Africanus (236-183 BC) succeeded in taking Carthage Nova. Many hostages of Celtiberian origin fell into the hands of the Romans during the conquest of the Carthaginian bases in Spain. Allucius and his fiancée were among them, but they were freed thanks to Scipio`s magnanimity (report of Titus Livius). According to Jean-Pierre De Bruyn, the author of Erasmus Quellinus` catalogue raisonné, the present work can be dated to around 1645/50. He describes it as being of high quality (in a letter to the owner of the painting, 15.7.2019). The style is classical in character. The scene is rendered as if on a stage against a backdrop of ancient architecture. Allucius and his fiancée are placed exactly in the centre of the picture. The beautiful king`s daughter is conspicuous by her bright white robe and her parents, who had previously tried to obtain their daughter`s freedom through gifts, are shown behind her. The commander Scipio stands elevated by a few steps. He gestures, like a high priest, towards the sculpture of a female deity perched on an altar illuminated by flames inside the temple. Quellinus treated the theme of Scipio`s generosity several times. A smaller version on copper was sold together with its counterpart "Coriolanus begs to protect Rome" at auction (Sotheby`s, London, 4.12.2008, lot 124). According to De Bruyn, a third version by Quellinus was kept in the Bailén Collection in Madrid. The artist frequently created several variants of the same theme for sale on the art market in Antwerp as well as for private patrons. Not infrequently, as in the case of the "Magnanimity of Scipio", there is one version on copper and a larger one on canvas. Quellinus is considered one of Rubens`s most important pupils and successors. He became the city painter of Antwerp after Rubens` death in 1640. Quellinus was decisive in the development of Flemish Baroque painting and introduced a more classical style of Baroque, as evidenced by the present work. Erasmus Quellinus II und Werkstatt, Großmut des Scipio Öl auf Leinwand. 108 x 162,8 cm. Provenienz Privatsammlung Braaschaat 1977. – Deutscher Privatbesitz. Literatur Jean-Pierre De Bruyn: Erasmus II Quellinus.
