After Domenico Zampieri, called Il Domenichino, Italian 1581-1641- The Cumean Sybil; oil on board, 30 x 27 cm (unframed). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: A 19th-century copy after the original painting by Bolognese artist Domenichino, held in the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The Cumaean Sybil was a historical priestess of the oracle at Cumae, an Ancient Greek colony near Naples, largely known to Romans through her appearance in Virgil’s ‘Aeneid’. Serving as a popular subject amongst Italian baroque artists, it provided them with a legitimate excuse to depict beautiful young women in exotic dress. Domenichino is known to have painted at least two other Sibyls - one in The Wallace Collection, London and the other at the Pinacoteca Capitolina in Rome. The three closely-related works depict richly-attired women with elaborate headdresses.品相报告: Please refer to department for condition report
