Note: A 19th-century copy after the original oil on canvas by Correggio, dating to c.1532-33, and held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna [no.274]. The series of Jupiter's Loves, to which this relates, was conceived after the success of Correggio's 'Venus and Cupid with a Satyr' [Louvre, Paris]. The story of Jupiter and Io is inspired by Ovid's classic Metamorphoses: Io, daughter of Inachus, the first king of Argos, is seduced by Jupiter (Zeus in Greek), who hides behind the dunes to avoid hurting the jealous Juno. Jupiter was often tempted by other women and took on various disguises in order to cover his various escapades, including those of a swan, an eagle, and, here, a dark cloud, despite the bright daylight. Jupiter here embraces the nymph, his face barely visible above hers, while she pulls herself towards him with barely contained sensuality. Noteworthy is the contrast between the evanescent figure of the immaterial Jupiter, and the sensual substance of Io's body, shown lost in an erotic rapture, which very much anticipates the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) and Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). 品相报告: Please refer to department for condition report
