PROVENANCE: From Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Private collector Measurements: Height: 27 1/8" Width: 28 1/8" Large Antique Chinese bronze ceremonial lidded tripod wine-vessel. Ovoid body gently tapered to short cylindrical neck, with the curved hand elevated from the shoulder, balanced with a loop handle. The domed lid makes up the Taotie face and upper body while the container makes up the lower body, supporting a bronze rabbit finial, simulating the general helmet shaped cover. Raised on three legs. A tiger crouching a top the elevating straight spout. Archaic Kui dragon motif, comprising taotie masks ensconce the outer surface. The taotie mask can resemble protection or be a representation of the forces of nature. It has served as a warning against greediness, gluttony, sensuality, self-indulgence in Chinese culture. The vessel has a mottled chalk-green patina and some encrustation on the outer surface. Crusted golden russet-greyish to attractive turquoise sea blue molted patina.
