Expected folds; center fold reinforced on verso; attached to separate sheet of paper by mounting strips; very good.Chief Justice George Walton orders all sheriffs to summon James Martin and James McNeil to appear before the Richmond County Superior Court on the fourth Tuesday of October 1783. The Governor of Georgia was suing them for £10. At the October term, an attorney appeared for the defendants, and the jury found for the plaintiff and awarded £11.7s.6d. plus costs and interest.George Walton (ca. 1749-1804) was born in Virginia, raised by an uncle, and moved to Savannah, Georgia, in 1769, to study law. He gained admission to the bar in 1774 and quickly became one of the most successful lawyers in Georgia. He supported the patriot cause and served as Secretary of the Georgia Provincial Congress and president of the Council of Safety. From 1776 to 1778, he represented Georgia in the Second Continental Congress, where he signed the Declaration of Independence. In 1778 he accepted a commission as a colonel in the 1st Georgia Regiment of Militia. He was wounded and captured during the Battle of Savannah in December 1778 and was exchanged in October 1779. He then served as governor of Georgia for two months. He served as Chief Justice from 1783 to 1789 and filled a variety of other offices for short terms. He again served as governor from January 1789 to November 1790.
