Barye, descendant of a line of Lyon goldsmiths, was initiated from an early age into all the trades of metal processing and goldsmith techniques and became an outstanding engraver. He was then trained by the sculptor Bosio, the painter Jean-Antoine Gros and then by the sculptor Fauconnier with whom he made his first animal sculpture. He got into the habit of going to the museum to study the animals of the menagerie and researched a lot. He successfully exhibited at the 1831, 1833 and 1836 exhibitions. It was because of his refusal for the 1837 salon and his complete break with the supporters of academism who then ruled the Institute, that he decided to create his own foundry and experiment with the modern techniques of his time in order to create sculptures that were ever more naturalistic and of great virtuosity. Preferring bronze to marble considered too cold, the artist multiplies the statuettes and small animal groups that he melts and carves himself. In the
traditional statuary art in which the animal is treated as an ancient and noble figure, he chooses to represent it as a living being, sometimes fierce.
Antoine-Louis Barye enjoyed great success during his lifetime with a rich bourgeois but also royal clientele; he was close to the members of the Orléans family and received many official orders; thus, in 1833, King Louis-Philippe ordered a group for the Tuileries: "the lion with a snake". He then became one of Napoleon III
's favourite sculptors.
His works can be seen in many public institutions, including the Louvre Museums and Orsay.
