缶亦作缻，《说文解字》曰：“缶，瓦器，所以盛酒浆，秦人鼔之以节歌。”缶可以远溯到三千多年前的《诗经》与《周易》：“坎其击缶，宛丘之道，无冬无夏，值其鹭（寿羽）”，其中“坎其击缶”是为娱乐内容，古人亦称“鼓缶”。缶炉，形似鬲，造型特殊少见，是极有特色的香炉款式，颇为后世喜爱。《尔雅·释器》：“盎谓之缶。”郭璞注：盆也。颜师古注：“今因炉形似盆，故名之曰缶炉。”此炉造型颇为敦厚精致，各角度观之，线条均明快劲挺。胎体精练，沉重压手，炉体作四方倭角形，洗口较窄，外沿起线，束颈折肩，斜直壁，两侧对饰钮状铺首耳，雕琢简练。皮色古润，包浆厚重，熠熠有光泽。底承随形倭角圈足，平底一侧阴刻行书“天字乙号”款识。整器气质刚健硬朗，而不失温雅之姿，是一件造型极为特殊的文人小炉，可谓小器大雅。
