The French painter Henry Moret, born in Cherbourg in 1856, got into art through the military in 1875.
His commander there recognised the talent of the young man and introduced him to Ernest Corroler, a drawing teacher and naval painter, to whom Moret remained attached throughout his life.
With Corroller as his teacher, who taught him landscape painting in the style of Corot and Courbet, his skills developed to such an extent that some time later he was able to enrol at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1880 the artist made his debut in the Paris Salon and finally, in 1888, he moved to the artist colony of Pont-Aven, whose members included Paul Gauguin.
While Morets images were influenced by Symbolism at the beginning of his stay, they became increasingly independent and impressionistic after Gauguin's departure from the colony in 1891.
The depiction of colourful landscapes of the coast of Brittany became the artist's trademark.
Moret's enthusiasm for effective lighting conditions and the surf of the sea can also be found in "Un village à Ploemeur, Morbihan", which was created in 1896, only one year after the terrible clash with the art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel.
Moret created more than 600 wonderful impressionistic works for Durand-Ruel's galleries in Paris and New York, before he died in Paris at the age of 56.
