An Antwerp maiolica tile from a mural, ca. 1560 Dim.: 13,5 x 13,5 cm Provenance: The collection of Piet Swimberghe, art historian and author of various works and articles on the subject of European pottery. Originally found in Antwerp. Ornamentally in the style of Hans Vredemand de Vries, while stylistically related to the mural depicting scenes from the Book of Tobit at Vila Viçosa, Portugal, dated 1558. A further large jug, dated 1562, in the Brussels Royal Museums of Art and History and published in Dumortier, Céramique de la renaissance à Anvers, p. 207, also shows stylistical similarities.
