A FINE SANDSTONE FIGURE OF A MALE DEITY, Cambodia, Khmer, Baphuon period, 11th ct., standing in samabhanga, both arms broken, wearing a vertical striated sampot draped high at his hips and back, a large flange falling to the front of his left leg, secured with a plain belt, his back showing a minute cloth section draped in the shape of a butter-fly, naked torso with belly-button, engraved nipples, his face displaying a serene expression with almond-shaped eyes below ridged eyebrows, broad nose, finely sculpted smiling lips, elongated earlobes and his hair combed in a chignon decorated with a lotus flower and kept together by a band - Provenance: A written confirmation dated to 1998, proves that this sculpture was in an English private collection since approximately 1976 - On base
