AN EXCELLENT BRONZE FIGURE OF A SAMURAI BY MIYAO EISUKE, Japan, signed Nihon kuni Miyao sei Saito zo, Meiji period, cast in standing posture, probably representing Ieyasu Tokugawa, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. His wearing an elaborate armour with fine brocade patterns, dragons and cranes amidst clouds and Tokugawa crests. Expressive face features, his hair combed to a tail held by a headband decorated with three Tokugawa 'Mon'. In his left hand he holds a trident, with his right a staff with an attached tassel. Bronze, partly gilt details, mounted on wood stand with gold lacquer decoration of a ho-ho bird. Signed at the left side, inside the robe - Property from an old South German private collection, assembled between 1980 and 2000 - Partly minor wear, one attribute is lost
