A CHINESE REVERSE GLASS PAINTING OF A LADY.Qing Dynasty, 18th Century. The well-dressed lady in a blue-ground floral garment with translucent sleeves, the hair tied back with elaborate jewellery, the face with a pale ivory white complexion, the right hand holding a fan decorated with wispy foliage through which is visible the left hand which supports the fan on the other side, framed, 26 x 20cm.清十八世紀 漆金木框嵌仕女圖鏡畫 According to of similar works the present painting may be considered brimming with erotic subtext. In Beauty Revealed: Images of Women in Qing Dynasty Chinese Painting, 2013, James Cahill suggests that the direct gaze of a female subject and translucent clothing are both commonly used to suggest sexual availability. Furthermore, according to him, a lady’s hand, viewed through a fan, is a symbol of the female genitalia. The finger citron, often present in paintings of women in this genre and which the human hand visually echoes, has been more widely mooted as anatomically symbolic in this regard (for example by Philip Rawson, Erotic Art of the East: the Sexual Theme in Oriental Painting and Sculpture, 1968, fig 100).
