雪山大士为释迦牟尼佛苦行时的形象，其形象来源于佛教经典《大般涅经》。据此经所述，佛祖释迦牟尼因目睹众生疾苦，即抛弃权位入雪山苦行，静坐思维，不避风雨，坚持不懈达六年之久，身体也变得极度消瘦，筋骨暴露。这一故事随佛教传入中土，激励着佛教信徒毫不懈怠、不断精进。此像沿袭了雪山大士的经典造型，头饰螺发，面庞消瘦，表情宁静而深沉。上身躯体羸弱，瘦骨嶙峋，左手搭于右臂处，右手抚于左膝上。腰围兽皮，左膝屈起，右腿蜷盘。整像造型生动，刻工简朴，将释迦牟尼佛苦修时的形象刻画地栩栩如生，传神至极。
