British School, 18th CenturyFour Framed Plates from The Complete English Peerage: Murray, Lord Mansfield; Hay, Lord Hay; Fortescue, Lord Fortescue; Willoughby, Lord MiddletonUnsigned, identified on modern labels affixed to the frame backing paper.Etchings and engravings with hand coloring (possibly later), sight sizes 11 x 7 1/2 in. (27.8 x 19.0 cm), in matching French mats and frames.Condition: Minor rippling, not examined out of frames.Provenance: Skinner, Inc., Sale 1871, Lot 350.N.B. The Rev. Alexander Jacob (1731-1785) was vicar of St. Dunstan’s in the West and one of the King’s chaplains in ordinary. He is best known as the author of A Complete English Peerage, Containing a Genealogical, Biographical, and Historical Account of the Peers of This Realm Together with the Different Branches of Each Family … (2 vols. in 3, London, 1766–69).
