太平通宝始创于北宋，是宋代的第一种年号钱。天下太平是万福存在的前提，历来为世人所祈求，所以那时被用来作压岁钱。人们多在新年伊始悬挂或佩戴此钱，祈求家人平安健康。直至清代，于1854年7月由上海小刀会再次铸造“太平通宝”钱。此种钱币正面直读为“太平通宝”，钱背面上下分别为日月纹，日与月的图案合成就是汉文“明”字，所以这种形式其标志着反清复明的信念。此枚和阗白玉钱，正好符合这一时期的时代特征，可谓历史之见证。
