祖籍浙江吴兴（今湖州市），生于上海青浦。字一亭，号白龙山人、梅花馆主、海云楼主等，法名觉器。清末民初时期海上著名书画家、实业家、杰出慈善家，海上重要名家之一。与任伯年、吴昌硕友善。工书画，所作花果、鸟兽、佛像，雄健浑厚，与吴昌硕相近。曾两次任上海总商会主席。加入同盟会，资助辛亥革命和二次革命，任中国国民党上海分部部长。上海光复后，历任军政府交通部长、商务总长、中华银行董事。后任南京国民政府中央救灾
