|绿度母因身体为绿色而得名，是所有度母中最活跃最重要者，也被称为一切度母之源。在佛教神系中，具有拔济众生出种种苦难之功能。以她为中心的二十一度母组合就是她无边慈悲力的体现。除了与无量光佛的传承关系外，她绿色的体色还经常与北方不空成就佛联系起来。深绿色的体色给她赋予了忿怒的神格。据传说，白度母是从观音菩萨的右眼所生，绿度母是左眼所生。白度母持白莲花，绿度母持优钵罗花（或称青莲花）。白莲花是白天开放，晚上合拢，优钵罗花是白天合拢，晚上开放，二者合一，象征二者日夜观照世间众生，随时救助。在很多藏传佛教艺术中，绿度母往往占据了女尊菩萨的中心位置，或者与白度母对称出现。
